Hey,

I'm looking for some advice about gaming pcs, I know there's lots of you who could help :p

I was gonna use this website https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/
The modest and decent builds use intel i3 not i5, this doesn't make much difference then?

Anyone have any experience of intel versus amd?

Thanks,

Coltie

Ah so you are in the UK.

I bought my PC from PC Specialist. Their reputation and service is very good

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

You can get a premade PC or customise. This is what I got:

Case: ZALMAN Z11 PLUS BLACK MID TOWER CASE
Processor: Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache
Motherboard: ASUS® Z170 PRO GAMING/AURA: ATX, LG1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs, RGB Lighting
Memory (RAM): 8GB HyperX SAVAGE DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 4GB)
Graphics Card: 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 - DVI, HDMI, 3 x DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready!
1st Hard Disk: 960GB KINGSTON UV400 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb (540MB/R, 500MB/W)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive: 16x BLU-RAY WRITER DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW & SOFTWARE
Power Supply CORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS-650 POWER SUPPLY
Processor Cooling: CoolerMaster Hyper 212X (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste: STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Z 5.1 PCI-E Soundcard - OEM
Wireless/Wired Networking: WIRELESS 802.11 AC1750 1,300Mbps/5GHz, 450Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD

Not cheap but I had no patience to build the PC from scratch like my last one, and my old PC was well...getting old. I kept my monitor and speakers.

Well, I heard if you want a PC able to support new games with high requirements, you should buy at least a new i5 (Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake). So you should forget about i3 (not sure about i3-8100 and the upcoming i3-9100 though).
I heard that the best price/performance option is i5-8600 Coffee Lake. You may prefer i5-8600K because it's much more available (at least, in Russia), and you can boost its performance by overclocking it, although you will need an adequate motherboard to handle the overclocking. As for Russia, Z-chipset mothers still cost pretty much, donno if cheaper B-chipset moms are compatible and sufficient for overclocking i5 Coffee Lakes, but probably some of them are.
